Some Hudson, NY Folks Had An Evening Of Fear Mongering

Recently with Helen Caldicott.

She claims over a million people died from Chernobyl, which is baseless (actually it's based on the discredited NYAS book).  The same book is responsible for claims about deformed children.

She says there's no "pill" you can take to rid the body of radioactive elements.  That's not true.

My "favorite" point of the evening (as reported) was this:

"At one point, she alluded to the 1955 Howard Hughes-produced movie “The Conqueror,” filmed downwind of a 1953 Nevada atomic bomb test site. Of 220 people who worked on the film, 91 contracted cancer and 46 died of it, including actors John Wayne, Agnes Moorehead, Susan Hayward, Pedro Armendariz and director Dick Powell."

Sounds terribly frightening...except we expect about 42% of the population to get cancer (ignoring any significant radiation exposures) and about 50% of those people to die from it.

Guess what?  Do the math, and that's the outcome for the film crews.  (And I'm ignoring how prevalent smoking was back in the 1950's).

Here are some clips from her talk:
