Finnish Power Group Likes Nuclear

It's buying an expensive Russian-designed reactor.

  1. Apparently they ran out of patience with Areva, who still haven't finished their Olkiluoto 3 plant, four years late and counting... will be interesting to see if this one fares any better.

  2. We shall see... I hope the Russians' offer is a fixed-price one like Areva's was.

Areva's price for Olkiluoto 3 was 3B; the real price is already over 8B, and apparently the French state takes the difference on the chin ;-)

But the delay as such causes further losses to the Finnish operator: they have already committed the capital, but need to pay for fossil fuels to keep the lights on. This additional cost is the subject of current litigation. I think it is especially this component of cost overrun that they are tired of and hope to prevent a recurrence of.

And note that Areva dropping from the current race may be partly their own doing: this time around their asking price was more realistic and based on actual engineering experience ;-)

  3. Sounds very messy, looks like everyone learns the hard way.
